ABOUT

Gavin is a watercolourist who was born in Melbourne and now works professionally in Sydney. He grew up in the leafy north-eastern suburb of Eltham, heavily influenced by the ground-breaking spirit of the Heidelberg and Montsalvat art scenes. He draws inspiration from local landscapes of both rural and urban areas, as well as flowers in a moody setting.
Gavin has visited most scenes depicted, including those from abroad. Often working 'en plein air' (on location), each piece tries to capture an immediacy and intimacy of that moment, filling the painting with movement and emotion. Gavin continues to paint what he observes locally.
As a third-generation artist, Gavin carries the rich legacy of Australian watercolour, deeply rooted in the atmospheric and impressionistic traditions. The artistic lineage of his family, including his Latvian grandfather, whose work is held in the prestigious Queensland Art Gallery (QAGOMA) and who regularly held solo exhibitions, continues to inspire him.
His inspiration also stems from living masters like Joseph Zbukvic and Herman Pekel, whose ability to capture light and mood is unparalleled. The national narratives painted by the late Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton resonate profoundly, often guiding his choice of subject matter from places personally visited. He hopes his art will create a special spot in your home.
